You Are the One
In my work as a counsellor, I hear countless stories of hurt. People carry wounds from words spoken, experiences endured, relationships lost, and needs that were never met.
It's natural to want the person who hurt us to acknowledge the pain they caused. We hope they'll take responsibility, apologize, or finally understand the impact of their actions.
Sometimes that happens.Often, it doesn't.
Maybe they aren't capable. Maybe they haven't done their own healing. Maybe the relationship has ended. Maybe they're no longer alive.
Without realizing it, we can begin to believe that our healing depends on someone else's actions. That we'll finally be okay when they change, apologize, understand, or give us what we've been waiting for.
But what if healing doesn't have to wait?
One of the most hopeful things I witness is that we already carry within us much of what we've been searching for.
If you need acknowledgment, acknowledge your own pain.
If you need compassion, offer it to yourself.
If you need someone to believe your experience, believe yourself.
If you need affirmation, speak it to yourself. If you need safety, begin creating it in your own life.
Even an apology often represents something deeper than the words themselves. It might mean, "What happened to you was real." It might mean, "You didn't deserve that." It might mean, "You are no longer to blame.
"Those are truths you don't have to wait for someone else to say.
None of this means that accountability isn't important or that apologies don't matter. They do. When they come, they can be deeply healing.
But your healing doesn't have to remain on hold until someone else is ready.
The person with the greatest capacity to help you move forward has been with you all along.
You.
