Heather's Story
My journey to becoming a registered clinical counsellor has been shaped by my own life challenges and the opportunities I've had to realize along the way. Connecting with and understanding others is a true passion of mine; something I aim to practice both personally and professionally.
My foundation in high-level sports throughout high school and college taught me the power of goal setting, hard work, and persistence—values I now bring
to my work with clients, helping them develop these life skills to tackle inevitable challenges.
Having navigated a difficult divorce, I gained a deep understanding of the distress that comes with losing a family network, raising children on your own,
and the process of rebuilding a new life and identity. The sudden loss of my mother was another pivotal moment, teaching me to walk through profound
sadness, while still finding hope and light along the way.
Changing careers in my forties was a reminder that life is unpredictable, but embracing change, adapting, and growing is what keeps it both challenging
and rewarding. I bring this perspective into my work, collaborating with clients to find approaches that build resilience, and create a life that feels fulfilling.
Approach
Trusting someone with your thoughts and feelings can be a challenge, and I understand that opening up doesn’t always come easily. My goal is to create
a safe, non-judgmental space where we can have honest, open conversations. I believe in meeting you where you are, focusing on what’s working for you, and exploring what we can do together to help you move forward. I want to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and
empowered to tackle the challenges you’re facing. I take a relational, person-centered approach, meaning I spend a lot of time
getting to know you and learning what will best support your growth and healing.
I believe that everyone has the strength and ability to navigate life’s ups and downs, but sometimes we all need a little guidance to realize our full
potential. Together, we can work towards finding the strategies and insights that will help you thrive. By integrating multiple therapeutic styles in our
sessions, treatment can be tailored to meet your unique needs. I draw on strength-based therapy (SBT), internal family systems (IFS), dialectical
behavioural therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
Education
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, with a major in English and a minor in Sociology. I recently graduated with a Masters
of Arts in Counselling Psychology with distinction from Yorkville University and am licensed as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the British
Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. As part of my professional development and as a way of growing as a counsellor, I am committed to
engaging in specialized training in IFS, trauma informed therapy, and divorce mediation.
Outside of Work
When I’m not working, you’ll find me spending time with family and friends, traveling, or enjoying the outdoors. I love staying active—whether it’s walking,
skiing, canoeing, biking, or playing volleyball—and being surrounded by nature keeps me grounded. One of my greatest accomplishments was hiking
Mt. Kilimanjaro with my brother and my 78-year-old father in 2018. Travelling to the highest peak in Africa was an experience I will never forget and doing it
with my family was incredible! In my downtime, I like to read and cook. This year I have also made it a goal to see more live music, of varying genres and
venues. I’m happiest and healthiest when I’m with the people I love and in the beauty of nature.
